Me in Egypt.
Me in Egypt.

Overtourism has been trending in certain destinations and at certain times of year. But, whether you want to get off-the-beaten-path or check off a bucket-list destination, spring is an ideal time to avoid crowds, take advantage of lower prices, and enjoy authentic experiences.

Here are some tips for where to go this spring.

March is one of the most pleasant and beautiful times to be in Mexico City, with warm, dry weather, lighter crowds than summer, and flowers in full spring bloom. It’s also a great time for  cultural festivals and spring equinox celebrations at nearby archaeological sites. Or, you could consider Kauai, which will have pleasant weather, less rain than winter, and smaller crowds than summer (as long as you arrive before the spring break rush). Vietnam will have excellent weather nationwide and moderate crowds; March is considered shoulder season there. Egypt will have comfortable weather for exploring temples and pyramids.

April is a fabulous month to visit Italy, with mild spring weather (but some rain) and blooming landscapes, making it ideal for sightseeing without summer crowds or heat. Fewer tourists mean easier access to sites. But be aware that Easter weekend, April 4-5, will draw larger crowds, especially in Rome. Southern Spain (Seville, Granada, Córdoba) is another great choice. The region is blisteringly hot in the summer, but in April it will be comfortably warm, and you can experience orange blossoms and spring festivals. If you plan to be there over Easter you will definitely encounter crowds, but you can experience Semana Santa—Spain's most important and absolutely spectacular religious celebration. It features elaborate nighttime processions through narrow streets, with haunting flamenco songs and an intensely atmospheric display of devotion, artistry, and centuries-old tradition. Book early.

May is an excellent time to visit Iceland, when it experiences up to 20 hours of daylight, early lupine blooms, powerful waterfalls from snowmelt, and milder weather than many other times of year. Another fabulous option is Turkey (Istanbul, Cappadocia), which will have perfect weather that’s ideal for exploring ancient sites and hot air ballooning. You could also consider the cities and deserts of Morocco before the heat and sandstorms of summer arrive.

June promises fewer crowds and lower prices in Northern Japan (Hokkaido, Tohoku), with cool, green landscapes and far fewer tourists than Tokyo or Kyoto. You will get perfect hiking weather and, in late June, blooming wildflowers across the countryside. This is also one of the best times to visit Slovenia, which will have warm, sunny days for hiking the Julian Alps, kayaking Lake Bled, and exploring Ljubljana's festivals. There will be lush green landscapes and fewer crowds than peak summer.
